By examining a list of what UFOCs are available in a given industry, one can deduce (with a fair amount of accuracy) which companies within the industry are still franchising versus which companies have either stopped franchising or have gone out of business altogether.

For example: in examining the first chart below ("Pizza Franchisors - Fast Food"), one may deduce that Pietro's Pizza Parlors is probably no longer franchising, as the most recent Pietro's Pizza Parlors UFOC available is dated 1990. Upon further investigation, my hypothesis was strengthened: I couldn't find any mention online of any franchising opportunities with Pietro's Pizza Parlors -- in fact, I couldn't find any mention of Pietro's Pizza Parlors at all. Perhaps the former franchisor changed its name; perhaps it went out of business. In any event, it is highly doubtful that Pietro's Pizza Parlors is currently franchising.

If the aforementioned hypotheses true, why did Pietro's stop franchising? What about its former system induced the franchisor to call it quits and pull out of the game? When trying to decide whether a franchise is worth purchasing, perhaps it would be a good idea to take a look at which franchisors in the industry have stopped franchising and why. No one wants to invest in a franchise only to discover that the franchisor is destined to stumble into the same pitfalls that troubled its predecessors.
